London in 1889 Queen Victoria’s reign. Waves of immigrants (Irish, Ashkenazi Jews), industrial revolution, and unskilled labour from the countryside leads to abject poverty. The rookeries, the slums of East London, are overcrowded, with low-quality housing and little or no sanitation. Poorly constructed dwellings, built with multiple stories and often crammed into any area of open ground have created densely populated areas of gloomy, narrow streets and alleyways. Occasionally, a dense, choking fog rolls in and helps hide East London’s dark deeds. Jack the Ripper, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson. Dockworkers strike. Unions, anarchists and spies. Suffragettes. John (Joseph) Merrick
